A Ministry to the Forgotten and Faceless Ever wonder where the idea of "soup kitchens" originated? The idea came from an old monastic practice. In ancient times monasteries were located within the city walls and monks and nuns provided soup and bread to the poor who came to their gates. In keeping with this tradition, the Benedictine Sisters of Erie have operated Emmaus Ministries for over 30 years. The Emmaus Soup Kitchen serves 1,000 hot meals each week and its food pantry distributes 30,000 food bags per year. Sister Gus Kids Café provides a home cooked meal and recreational opportunities to 70 children a day. Other services include a womens advocacy program and advocacy for seniors. |
