Benedictine life is focused by three vows: obedience, fidelity to the monastic way of life, and stability. At the end of the novitiate, a novice makes her first monastic profession for a minimum of three years (the scholasticate). At the conclusion of the scholasticate, she makes her perpetual monastic profession with vows for life.Obedience is a promise to be a faithful listener. With the ear of the heart we listen to the voice of the Spirit in the Scriptures, in the prioress and in one another, in the call of the Church and the cry of the poor. Then we work to respond with generosity and courage. Fidelity to the monastic way of life is a dedication to the change, growth and ongoing conversion to which life in community calls us. Our lives are a continuous process of listening to the voice of God in one another, opening our hearts to the Word and responding in creative fidelity and generous love. Stability is a promise to be faithful to one's sisters in this monastic community as a way of faithfulness to God. We establish the lifelong human bonds necessary for healing growth. We agree to search for God together, making our journey as honest, as loving, as human as possible. At the first monastic profession ceremony, the novice makes her vows before the community gathered in the chapel. At the perpetual profession ceremony, the scholastic makes her vows before the community in chapel, sings the Suscipe with the community, and receives the community ring from the prioress. |
