CHAPTER 32 – The Tools and Goods of the Monastery

The goods of the monastery, that is, its tools, clothing or anything else, should be entrusted to members whom the prioress/abbot appoints and in whose manner of life s/he has confidence. (RB 32:1)

This chapter of Benedict’s Rule aims at a general principle: Things are not merely things but part of God’s creation to be reverenced and carefully maintained. All things are holy and are to be treated as “sacred vessels of the altar” (RB 31:10) by each one of us. Things, like humans, come from God and point to God. Benedict tells us loud and clear that all things, all people, are to be appreciated, honored and reverenced.
