CHAPTER 55 - Clothing and Footwear

The clothing distributed to the members should vary according to local conditions and climate, because more is needed in cold regions and less in warmer. RB 55:1-2

Benedict describes here what a follower might look like on the outside. One's clothing and possessions can make a statement about who we are and what we think about ourselves. He is suggesting that living a life of moderation and balance on the outside might start the process of shaping what is to be seen on the inside. Simplicity, sufficiency, necessity and flexibility are values used by Benedict to describe his way of life.
