CHAPTER 58 - The Procedure for Receiving Members

Do not grant newcomers to the monastic life an easy entry, but, as the apostle says, "test the spirits to see if they are from God. (1Jn 4:1)." RB58:1-2

Benedict stresses in this chapter that being received into membership is not an easy task. It is a serious commitment, one that is not to be taken lightly. The new-comer is given space for reflection and given time to practice humility and patience. The days are filled with prayer, community and ministry for the world. It is a life of letting go and giving to the fullest, making a difference in the world, and living the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in these days and in these times.

The cut-to-the-chase questions are: Do you seek God with all your heart? Can you join your spiritual journey with others in community? Do you know that this is not a program to graduate from but a life-long commitment? Will Benedict's way of life be good for your spiritual journey?

Each day,
every day is filled with
and ministry
for the good of the world.

What a wonderful way to live life here on earth!
