CHAPTER 7 – Humility – The Sixth Step

The sixth step of humility is that we are content with the lowest and most menial treatment , and regard ourselves as a poor and worthless worker in whatever task we are given, saying with the prophet: “I am insignificant and ignorant, no better than a beast before you, yet I am with you always. (Ps 73:22-23).” (RB 7:49-50)

Do I let the “outside” world control my inner heart and state of mind? Do I live for the affirmation and approval of others? The important part about this step of humility is contentment not lowly status. Lack of contentment leads us into competition, jealousy, and clamoring for social status. The spiritual journey that Benedict describes helps us to steer clear of all that prevents inner freedom. Inner freedom allows us to say the words of Psalm 73: “God, I am with you always.”
