Chapter 7 - Tenth Step of Humility

The tenth step of humility is that we are not given to ready laughter, for it is written: “Only fools raise their voices in laughter (Sir 21:23).” (RB 7:59)

Do I use words to turn something into a joke or dismiss what I may not want to hear?

Do I make clever and witty comments to get my point across in a humorous way?

The spiritual journey that Benedict describes indicates that this type of laughter can undermine seriousness, mindfulness, moderation and kindness. He is advocating shared laughter that builds up the community and celebrates joy.
