CHAPTER 71 - Mutual Obedience

Obedience is a blessing to be shown by all, not only to the prioress/abbot but also to one another, since we know that it is by this way of obedience that we go to God. RB 71:1-2

For Benedict obedience is an integral part of his life and legacy. Obedience is mentioned throughout his Rule as a guide for our lives. Viewing obedience as a "gift" may be a challenge for our minds and hearts but not for Benedict. He believed that obedience, practiced every day, was about embracing a listening heart.

We are to
listen to the other,
reverence the other,
be open to the other
so that through the other
we see the face of Christ
and hear the voice of Christ.

May the other see and hear the same in us!
