CHAPTER 72 - The Good Zeal of Monastics

This, is the good zeal which members must foster with fervent love: "They should each try to be the first to show respect to the other (Rom. 12:10)," supporting with the greatest patience one another's weaknesses of body or behavior, and earnestly competing in obedience to one another ... Let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and may Christ bring us all together to everlasting life. (RB 72:3-6, 11-12)

These particular verses of the Rule of Benedict focus on relationships between the members of the community. The call is to look outward toward the needs of others. The test of authenticity is selfless love. Benedict's insertion of the quote from Romans gives this chapter of the Rule guidelines for our spiritual journey: reject evil, embrace good, respond with love, respect and reverence the other, be patient, be filled with zeal and live a life of service. Christ and the way that he preached becomes the center of the life of one who follows Benedict's Way.

Glorify God - Love beyond measure.
Cherish Christ - Seek peace and pursue it.
Listen to the Spirit - Pray and serve.
Reverence one another - Be open.
Uphold all - Do all of this together.
