Liturgical Music

Valiant is her name

When this song was a part of Morning Prayer recently I knew I wanted to post it. The Feast of Saint Scholastica seemed to be in the air so at first I thought we were singing about her. The last verse really caught my attention as this new year already feels as if it will be one of great change. That is exciting and terrifying at the same time.

A few days later I took a look at a community report which included much detail that was new to me. It was then that I realized we were singing about each and every woman whose life has been a branch on the deeply rooted tree known as the Benedictine Sisters of Erie. They each faced times of great change too.

Valiant is your name, women blest by God
Clothed in strength and hope, women filled with faith
Steadfast is your name, holding firm to freedom
Lead the way and we will follow,
may God be our guide.

Gentleness your name, women blest by God
Hearts in touch with others, women filled with love
Caring is your name, sharing other’s burdens
Lead the way and we will follow,
may God be our guide.

Vision is your name, having seen the way
Looking toward the future, women filled with Spirit
Patient is your name, trusting God’s fulfillment
Lead the way and we will follow,
may God be our guide.
