Benedictines live in scripture. Over and over again, we read every book of the bible. All our lives. The church itself uses selected passages to make a theological point, to remind us of the paschal events of our lives, to recall as models for us those great figures who have gone before us through the same undergrowth of life as we do. But not Benedictines.

We squeeze the spiritual life out of every word, every scene, every story, every book. It is an excursion into the history of God with the people. The rabbis tell a story:

Tothe Benedictine, it is not simply the Chosen People whose history is recorded in scripture. It is our own, as well. It is we who have been given the Word to lead us through or own growings and changes and questions and fears. In every page of the Book, we remember the promise: "I am with you all days even to the end of time." And those words make the road worth going.
