PROLOGUE 1 – Listening

Listen carefully to my instructions, and attend to them with the ear of your heart. Rule of Benedict - Prologue 1

The very first word of the Rule, LISTEN, provides us with Benedict’s essential and underlying theme. Listening to God is a particular way of Christian life for Benedict. This listening is central to followers of Benedict. For Benedict listening is found in the practical, in the daily: we listen to God in the psalmody and readings; we listen for God during Lectio Divina and silence; we listen for God in our hearts; we look for God in others.

Monastic spirituality flows from a belief in a God who comes to those who are disposed to listening. Benedict encourages us to listen deeply with the ear of our hearts. Listening fosters the sincere search for God. By this listening we can open ourselves to the varying ways that God speaks to us.

May we be challenged to listen for the many ways that God speaks to us!
