Seasons of the Spirit

Erie Benedictine Sister Carolyn Gorny-Kopkowski began the Spirit of the Seasons (SOS) retreats 32 years ago as Saturday Reflection Days based on the natural seasons of Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring connected with the four Paths of Creation Spirituality (Via Positiva, Via Negativa, Via Creativa and Via Transformativa). Soon afterwards SOS became weekend experiences with 100 weekends offered at the monastery over the years. For the past several years Spirit of the Seasons transitioned into Seasons of the Spirit with particular themes for each weekend. In 2016 SOS programs return to the original format of Saturday Reflection Days.

SOS is an interactive opportunity and provides:
• Presentations
• Prayer and Ritual
• Personal Solitude and Reflection
• Shared Wisdom
• Creative Activity

    DATES and THEMES
    February 27: Celebrate Women
    The time will come
    when, with elation,
    you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat. Feast on your life.
    Poem – Love after Love
    Derek Walcott

March is Women’s History month and March 8, International Women’s Day. Come to the Celebrate Women reflection day at the Mount. What better way to prepare for the March celebration of women? Feast on your life – on the lives of all women!

June 4: In Praise of Creation
No creature is superfluous, all of creation speaks of God’s love. Our insistence that each human being is an image of God should not make us overlook the fact that each creature has its own purpose. None is superfluous. The entire material universe speaks of God’s love, his boundless affection for us. Soil, water, mountains: everything is, as it were, a caress of God. —Pope Francis in Ladato Si (84)

In Praise of Creation will feature:
    • Nature’s 4 basic elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water)
    • Humankind’s Diversity
    • Plant and Animal Beauty

Summer is the perfect season to praise Creation! Seize this invitation and gather with others in the spirit of gratitude and joy.

October 1: The Depth of Mercy
Mercy is a revelation of God not an intellectual deduction. It is a happening, an event where God reveals Self to us in redemptive love and in the great gift which is the outcome of this event: our mercy to others.—Thomas Merton

What is the meaning of Merton’s words….Mercy within Mercy within Mercy? Why not continue the current Year of Mercy? Why not share your insights and be challenged by others?
