Benedictine Hospitality on a Summer Day

The Altar Rosary Society from Our Lady Queen of the Americas parish in Conneaut Lake, PA recently visited the monastery for a mini-reflection day. A presentation on the ministries of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie was given by Sisters Cecilia and Bernadette Sullivan. The group, accompanied by their pastor, Fr. Steve Anderson, prayed midday prayer and enjoyed lunch with the community. Sister Jean Wolbert, Hospitality Coordinator, treated them to a tour the monastery and they also had an opportunity to visit Chapter 57, the community gift shop. After some additional learning about the Benedictine sisters through a question and answer sharing, the group headed home, “richer for having been here,” as one guest remarked. It was a lovely day made special by the gift of hospitality. The Rule of Benedict is clear: “All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ” (RB 53: 1). For the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, opening our lives to others is Benedictine hospitality at its best.
