Celebrating Advent

Advent is a special time for the Benedictine Sisters of Erie. Each week begins with the Vigil Service on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the monastery chapel. For the past two weeks the gathered assembly contemplated the question, “Who is John the Baptist?” In the reflections for Week II Sister Norma Jean Kingsley identified John as a holy person who kept what was in the best interest of the people foremost. He was a messenger who by example became the message that encouraged people to change their hearts to welcome the Messiah.

This idea was continued when Sister Miriam Mashank began Week III with the reminder that the people listened to John because his words corresponded with his actions. She asked the question: “Will we be a sign of joyful hope as we prepare the way for God?” The community took this message to heart in a celebration of Rejoice Sunday. It included naming joys, dancing a “dance of joy,” creating a Magnificat, and sharing a simple supper.

So, what does all this say? The answer is simple: We choose to be a sign of joyful hope. Maybe you will choose to do the same!
