Christmas Is for Children: St. Benedict’s Day Care Center

Santa’s “Ho, Ho, Ho” and his sack full of toys brought joy to all the children at St. Benedict Child Development Center on December 16. The Bread of Life Community at St. Joseph’s Church provided gifts for each child. Pictured at right, Sister Diane Rabe, director, accompanies Santa to one of the toddler rooms. Santa’s visit was the finale of “red week,” when, as explained by Benedicta Riepp participant and Center staff person Alyssa Harpst, the toddlers in her room focused on all things red: “We put red noses on our hand-and-feet reindeer, played with red goop and put red holly berries on the green trees we painted the week before.” (That was green week!)

“Children also made ornaments to take home for their families,” said Sister Diane, “and, with the help of teachers and some parents, the preschoolers prepared a dinner that they served to all their parents.”

The Center, located on East Ninth Street, manages daycare, head start for migrant children and infant care programs.
