The Mending Place
Mary Federowicz, a Job Readiness Specialist at St. Benedict Education Center (SBEC) had an idea: If newcomers to our community are looking for ways to support their families, why not make the most of the skills and talents they bring with them?
In early 2011 Mary's idea became a reality with the opening of THE MENDING PLACE. It offers a supportive environment where newcomers can begin to earn money to help them become self-sufficient and contributing members of the community. Services of THE MENDING PLACE include: mending, alterations and special handmade products such as curtains, aprons, scrubs, hospital gowns and other household items. Work is done professionally by women newly arrived in the USA from refugee camps. Before working for THE MENDING PLACE, their skills are fine-tuned during an 8 week sewing course taught at SBEC by a skilled seamstress. The services are free and donations are appreciated.
THE MENDING PLACE, previously located at the Bethany Outreach Center, has recently moved back to its original home: SBEC, 330 East 10th Street, Erie. It is open for business Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary and most items are ready to be picked up within 24-48 hours. For more information call 814-452-4072, ext. 298 or 241.
