Benedictine Sisters of Erie Receive Grant for Energy Audit

Good News! $10 000 ASHRAE LEVEL II Energy Audit Grant.

The Penelec Sustainable Energy Fund awarded the Benedictine Sisters of Erie a $10,000 ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) Level II energy audit grant to possibly cover 5 of the Benedictine inner city buildings. They are St. Benedict Education Center; St. Benedict Community Center (gym/auditorium); St. Benedict Center (Day Care, Emmaus Ministries and Residence); Neighborhood Art House and The Studio at St. Mary’s: A Space to Create (Gus’ Kids Café and programs). CARE chose Gary Jacobs, Senior Energy Engineer for Smart Edge USA, to do the audit.

The first step was a free level I audit which involved a brief walk- through of each building with recommendations of which buildings would benefit from a level 2 audit. The grant would cover Level II audits of St. Benedict Community Center and St. Benedict Center. An additional $2000 would cover the Neighborhood Art House. The Benedictine Sisters of Erie chose to include all three buildings. The level II audit involves a detailed assessment with recommendations to increase the energy efficiency of each building. As funding becomes available to implement the recommendations from the Level II audit, the Sisters will be closer to achieving their goal of a 50% reduction in the use of fossil fuels by the year 2030.
