CHAPTER 23 - Excommunication for Faults

If anyone is found to be stubborn or disobedient or proud, if s/he grumbles or in any way despises the holy rule and defies the orders of the elders, s/he should be warned twice privately by them in accord with Christ’s injunction (Mt 18:15-16). RB 23:1-2

Benedict gives us a basic procedure for correcting faults: the elders admonish the one at fault twice, then the leader does so publically. If there is no change in behavior the person is excluded from table or prayer. One who loves community life, will find this to be a difficult form of punishment. Benedict is concerned for conversion and salvation. The hope is that the person at fault will change their thinking, seek reconciliation and gain re-admittance to communal life.
