A Busy Start to the Week at the Food Pantry

With both a furniture giveaway and voter registration drive, Emmaus Food Pantry was busier than usual on Monday morning. Regular food distribution runs from 9-11AM every Monday and Tuesday, but yesterday Sister Colette Korn, OSB also helped to organize donated items to give away to guests, items including furniture such as sofas, dressers, desks, and mattresses. This was a special giveaway as a generous benefactor recently moved and offered these pieces. Sister Colette also had children’s books, clothing, and household items available. This is not the first time she has helped with giveaways; there have been two others since Erie entered the yellow phase of Covid-19 re-opening.

At the other end of the driveway, Emmaus staff member Rita Scrimenti, recently-retired Pantry Coordinator Sister Lucia Surmik, OSB, and volunteers Cindy Purvis and Becky Pruveadenti had voter registration forms and mail-in ballot requests ready for pantry guests. They helped guests determine which form was appropriate for them to fill out and guided them through the process of registering to vote or applying to vote by mail. “Voting matters because we want to elect people who will represent what matters to us,” Cindy Purvis shared. Sister Lucia was grateful to be back at the pantry volunteering for a cause as important as voter registration, “The little we can do we will do.”
