Longtime Pantry Volunteer Dmitry Tishchenko Turns 90 years old!
Longtime Pantry Volunteer Dmitry Tishchenko Turns 90 years old!

From Sister Lucia Surmik, coordinator of the Emmaus Food Pantry: “Our quiet, smiling, ever young Dmitry has been a dedicated volunteer at Emmaus Food Pantry for fifteen years. Dmitry, very quietly but so cheerfully, gathers our empty cardboard boxes and loads them on the truck for recycling. He is seen filling in wherever he is needed, especially helping the elderly and guests who need extra assistance with their bags of food. We have been blessed with Dimitry’s gentle and peaceful presence among us. We wish him a very Happy 90th Birthday!”

From his daughter: “He is a wonderful father and grandfather. Even we cannot say how blessed we are to have him. We thank God for his warm open heart.”

(Ed. Note: Dmitry does not speak much English. Breanna Mekuly, Emmaus staff member, wrote the questions and sent them home with Dmitry who then shared them with his daughter. She translated and assisted him in responding in English to the questions.)

Breanna: How long have you been volunteering at the Food Pantry?
Dmitry: I have been serving at the pantry for more than 10 years. I like serving here because I like to be around people and help others.

Breanna: So you must have started volunteering soon after you moved to the USA. How long have you been living in the USA? And where did you move from?
Dmitry: 23 years. My family and I came from the Ukraine in 1994.

Breanna: Who is in your family?
Dmitry: My family consists of my wife, eleven children, and many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Breanna: Oh wow! What did you do professionally to support your large family?
Dmitry: I was a shoemaker for 56 years.

Breanna: And what do you like to do when you’re not with family or at the Food Pantry?
Dmitry: One of my favorite things to do is garden.

On behalf of the Emmaus staff, we’d like to wish Dmitry a Happy 90th Birthday!
