Practice Lectio Divina

Lectio divina, Latin for “divine reading,” is an ancient method of praying to promote union with God. It is slow, non-product oriented, contemplative, and filled with silence. Its outward appearances might be a gentler spirit, a passionate heart, greater compassion, love and peace-making. Consider making lectio divina part of your day every day.
Steps for practicing this prayer form:
  • Read the passage below slowly with attention, savoring each word. (lectio)
  • Reflect on the meaning and message of the text for you. (meditatio)
  • Pray with reverence and gratefulness. (oratio)
  • Rest in God’s abiding presence. (contemplatio)
  • Be a prophetic witness in the world. (actio)

The world you made firm, never to be shaken; your rule stands firm from of old, for you are the Eternal One.

May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be acceptable in your presence, O God, my glory, my rock.

I love your law, O God! It is ever in my mind. Your command makes me wiser than my foes, for it is ever with me.

With the melody of lyre and harp I sing of your glory. I delight in your many wonders.

You are the strength of your people, a refuge where your anointed find help. O God, save your people; bless and protect your heritage. Shepherd of carry them forever.

God says to the people, "I will spread peace like a river and the glory of the nations like an overflowing torrent."

Caught up in your beauty, I speak of my heart's desire: to find the fullness of life, dwelling in your presence forever.

We give you praise, O God of Life; both now and evermore we bless your name. From east to west and north to south, from sunrise to sunset may your name be praised.

Praise God all you heavens,
sun moon, all stars of light,
all waters above the heavens,
let the glory of praise resound

Lifting up my hands, I call upon your name,
for your love is finer than life.
I shall feast on the riches of your banquet;
my heart will leap for joy in praise of you.

Be of the same mind as Christ Jesus who, though by nature was God, did not cling to equality with God.

Bless me, O God, that I might live and obey your word.
Open my eyes that I may see the wonders of your law.

O God, you see and know the truth.
Stay near, do not be silent.
Awake, come to my help.

Remember, I am your God.
Do not fear; I am with you.

I will ponder all your precepts and consider your paths.
I take delight in your statutes and will not forget your word.

The Holy One guides the steps of the faithful.
Though they stumble,
they never shall fall.

You are a refuge to the poor,
a refuge to the needy in distress,
shelter from the rain,
shade from the heat.

I will thank you with all my heart as I learn your decrees.
I will faithfully observe your law; may I never be abandoned

Let all the earth stand in awe.
Let all who live be holy.
God spoke, and it came to be,
commanded, and it sprang into being.

The Holy One enfolds us in tenderness, fills our life with richness, renewing our youth like an eagle's.

O God, I love the beauty of your dwelling, the place of your glory.

So turn from evil and do good; live the truth of God's law, and you shall have life forever.

At the new moon, raise a song; play the timbrel, the sweet sounding harp, and the lute. At the full moon, the trumpet resounds; let all gather for the solemn feast.

Not of themselves do the just prevail; God is their source of strength.

May God's love rest upon us, and may our hearts be filled with peace.

The mountains melt like wax in the presence of the Holy One. The skies proclaim justice; the glory of God is seen by all.

You are our source of strength; you give us your favor and glory. You will not refuse any good to all who walk in sincerity.

Day after day I will praise you and glorify your name forever.
You are great, worthy of praise.
Your magnificence is beyond our knowing.

Blest are you, O God.
I praise you among all the nations, proclaim your name throughout the land.
I will sing psalms and give you glory, for you have shown me great love.

You are the God of All Life.
You enlighten my darkness.
With you I can withstand any hardship.
In you I find my courage.

I will never take back my love; my faithfulness will not fail.
I will never break my covenant or go back on my promise.

I am like an olive tree, growing in the house of God.
In the presence of all the faithful I will trust and give thanks,
proclaiming the goodness of God.

God spread a cloud to cover them by day and fire to give light in the darkness.

How good and how pleasant it is when all people dwell in unity.

You love those who search for truth.
In wisdom, center me, for you know my frailty.

Long ago you created the earth and set the heavens in place.
They shall perish, but you will remain.
They will all wear out like a garment, but you are everlasting.

O God, listen to my prayer; let my cry for help reach you.
See my grief and answer me quickly.

O God, you are good and forgiving, full of love for all who call.
Listen to my prayer and attend to the sound of my voice.

You, O God, search the mind and know the depths of the heart.

Return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.
Rend your hearts and not your clothing.

A clean heart create for me, O God.
Put a steadfast spirit within me.

I will bless God with constant words of praise. I glory in God alone; let the humble hear and rejoice.

Earth, be humbled before the Holy One, for rock was turned into pools of water and stone into a flowing spring.

Your word stands firm forever, O God. Like the earth you created, your faithfulness lasts for all ages.

The just will flourish like the palm tree and grow tall as Lebanon cedars. Planted in your garden, they will flourish in your presence.

Be strong; fear not! God is coming. The God of justice and mercy is coming to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared. Then will the lame leap like gazelles; silent tongues will sing.

In days to come the dwelling of the God of Life shall be upon the highest mountain, exalted above the hills.

O God, you are robed in beauty and clothed with great strength. All glory and splendor cannot equal your presence.

Your teaching is perfect, renewing life. Your decrees are trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. Your law is truth, gladdening the heart.

If today you hear God's voice, harden not your hearts.

When the kindness and love of our Savior appeared, our worthy deeds were no reason for this. God's mercy alone, in kindness and care, with patience and love, all this gave us new life.
