Practice Lectio Divina

Lectio divina, Latin for “divine reading,” is an ancient method of praying to promote union with God. It is slow, non-product oriented, contemplative, and filled with silence. Its outward appearances might be a gentler spirit, a passionate heart, greater compassion, love and peace-making. Consider making lectio divina part of your day every day.
Steps for practicing this prayer form:
  • Read the passage below slowly with attention, savoring each word. (lectio)
  • Reflect on the meaning and message of the text for you. (meditatio)
  • Pray with reverence and gratefulness. (oratio)
  • Rest in God’s abiding presence. (contemplatio)
  • Be a prophetic witness in the world. (actio)

God is just and loves justice; the upright shall see God.

O my Strength, it is you to whom I turn, for you are my refuge, the God who shows me love.

You, O God, are the source of all blessings. Alleluia!
Let us be glad, rejoice, and give you glory. Alleluia! Alleluia!

My heart overflows with words of praise. To the beloved I sing my hymn, my tongue is nimble as the pen of a scribe.

Sing joyfully to God, all the earth. Walk in the holy presence. Ring out your praise with great rejoicing.

Give thanks to the God of Goodness whose love endures forever.

O God, you search me and know me.
You know my resting and my rising;
you discern all my thoughts.
You know when I walk or lie down,
you are familiar with all my ways.

You planted us on the mountain,
the place where you made your dwelling.
You, O God, live forever.
You are our strength.
You are our song.

You welcome me with choice blessings.
I asked life of you;
you gave me length of days forever.

The heavens are covered with your glory,
and with your praise the earth is full.
Your splendor spreads like the light;
your presence radiates strength.

It is good to give thanks to you, O God,
to make music to your holy name,
to proclaim your love at daybreak
and your faithfulness through the night.

Your ways, O God, are holy.
Who is like you?

One nation shall not raise arms against another,
training for war will be not more.
God alone is the source of peace.
Let us walk in the holy presence.

All beings everywhere,
in the heavens,
on earth,
and under the earth,
shall proclaim the glory of God.

Great is the Creator, worthy of all praise!
Let the city of God rejoice.
The holy mountain, beautiful where it rises,
is the joy of all the earth.

Teach me your ways that I may walk in your truth. Let my heart find joy in giving honor to your name.

Happy are those who love God, who take delight in all God’s commands. Their offspring will be prosperous on earth; the children of the upright shall be blest.

Hear the prayer of your faithful, for you are ever gracious to your people. Thus it will be known to the very ends of the earth that you are God.

O God, save me by your name; with your strength uphold me. O God, hear my prayer; listen to the words of my mouth.

I shall walk in the path of freedom, for I seek your precepts.

Be a rock of refuge and a firm shelter to save me, for you are my rock, my safety. For your name’s sake, lead and guide me.

Bless God, all you works of creation. All creatures of the earth, bless God. God of Creation, we praise you forever.

Before the world began, we were chosen to be holy and blameless in Christ, to be full of love.

Turn to me and be safe, all you ends of the earth, for I am God; there is no other!

I will sing of your love, O God; through all generations I will proclaim your faithfulness. Of this I am sure that your love lasts forever, your faithfulness is firmly established.

Let there be no exile, no sound of weeping in our streets. Happy the people with such blessings; happy are all who put their trust in you.

May all creation praise you, for you spoke, and they were made. You sent forth your spirit, and they were created. No one can resist your word.

Let my words proclaim your praise because you teach me your ways. Let me sing of your promise, for your commands are just.

Give thanks and acclaim the holy name; tell the whole world of God's wonderful deeds. Praise the Holy One; glorify the sacred name.
Rejoice in the source of our strength.

Let those you protect be glad and ring out their joy. You shelter those who love your name; in you they rejoice.

O God, you are worthy to receive glory, honor, and blessing, for you have created all things; by your will they came to be and were made.

How can I repay you, O God, for all your loving kindness? The cup of salvation I will raise; my lips shall sing your goodness.

You love those who search for truth. In wisdom, center me, for you know my frailty. With fresh flowing water wash me of my iniquities.

In God alone I am at rest; my help comes from the Holy One. I shall not be disturbed; I shall stand firm.

Happy those whom you teach, O God, whom you instruct in your law.

God touches all in the heavens and on the earth; everything is full of sacred presence. Give thanks to God, you who fulfill the holy word. Sing praise, all creation. Give thanks to God!

Do not fear; / I am with you. Do not be anxious; / I am your God. I will strengthen you and uphold you in justice.

I treasure your promise in my heart that I may not sin. Blest are you, O God! Teach me your ways.

God beholds the people of the earth to see if any are wise, to see if any seek the truth.

O praise God, Jerusalem! Zion, praise the Holy One for restoring the bars of your gates and blessing the people within you, for establishing peace on your borders and feeding you with finest wheat.

The saving strength of God has been my song; it has given me great joy.

All peoples shall come to give you thanks for your mercy, for your goodness has been made known.

As fresh life springs up from the earth, like a garden's promise in spring, so shall God make justice and praise spring up before all the nations.

Answer me in your loving kindness; turn toward me in your compassion.

Fear not, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name, for you are mine.

You are my shepherd, O God; there is nothing I shall want.

I will sing of God’s glory. Proclaim the greatness of the Holy One, the Rock, whose deeds are perfect, whose ways are holy! Proclaim this faithful God, so upright and just.

We give thanks to you, O God. As we recount your wonderful deeds, we give thanks, remembering your name.

Let your love comfort me according to your promise. Be compassionate that I may live, for your law is my delight.

Our hope is in the name of God who made the heavens and the earth.

God touches all in the heavens and on the earth; everything is full of sacred presence.
Sing praise, all creation. Give thanks to God!
