Practice Lectio Divina

Lectio divina, Latin for “divine reading,” is an ancient method of praying to promote union with God. It is slow, non-product oriented, contemplative, and filled with silence. Its outward appearances might be a gentler spirit, a passionate heart, greater compassion, love and peace-making. Consider making lectio divina part of your day every day.
Steps for practicing this prayer form:
  • Read the passage below slowly with attention, savoring each word. (lectio)
  • Reflect on the meaning and message of the text for you. (meditatio)
  • Pray with reverence and gratefulness. (oratio)
  • Rest in God’s abiding presence. (contemplatio)
  • Be a prophetic witness in the world. (actio)

God protects the way of the just, but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.

Give thanks to God upon the harp; with a ten-stringed lute chant praise. Sing a song that is new; play gladly with all your skill.

I am filled with awe at the sight of the heavens, the sun, moon, and stars which you set in place. Who are we that you care for us?

God is eternal! Let earth rejoice; let distant shores and isles be glad. The Holy One is clothed in glory, set firm in justice and truth.

I will announce the decree of the Holy One who said to me, "You are mine. It is I who have begotten you this day ... "

O God, you are my saving light; in your presence I am not fearful. You protect my life, freeing me from fear.

God is the strength of all the faithful, of all who draw near.
Hearts will be comforted, spirits renewed.
To the God of Blessing,
let the glory of praise resound.

Tell all those of future generations that such is God who saves,
who lives forever and always, the One who guides us in safe paths.

I have called to you, O God; come quickly to help me!
Hear my voice when I cry to you.

Justice shall flourish in those days, a profound peace from sea to sea and to the ends of the earth, until the moon shines no more. Enemies shall fall, and hate shall be no more.

May peace endure like the sun and the moon, from age to age, and descend like rain on the meadow, like showers watering the earth.

May the mountains echo peace and the hills justice. May your anointed defend the poor and save the children of the needy.

Let the nations be glad and rejoice, for you govern the world with justice. With fairness you care for the people. The nations on the earth you guide. Let the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you.

Simeon said to Mary: "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted - and you, Mary, a sword will pierce - so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

How beautiful ... God has shown great strength before the eyes of all the nations. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God ... How beautiful!

Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly host, praising God and saying "Glory to God in the highest heavens. Peace on earth to those on whom God's favor rests."

The people who walked in darkness have see a great light. Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shown.

The people who walked in darkness have see a great light. Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shown.

The people who walked in darkness have see a great light. Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shown.

In you, O God, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your justice rescue me, free me from oppression; keep your word and save me.

I have resolved, O God, to keep your word. With all my heart I implore your favor; show mercy as you promised.

God, the source of all blessings, is glorious over all the earth. Our inheritance is from God, given to Israel out of love.

Go up on a high mountain, joyful messenger of Jerusalem. Shout with a full voice, "here is God!" Yes, here is God, the source of all strength.

Be just with me, as I am just. Put an end to the malice of the wicked! Strengthen the just, O searcher of heart and mind. You are the one who protects me, who saves the upright of heart. You are a just judge, slow to anger.

Have mercy on me, for I am in distress. Tears have wasted my eyes, my throat, and my heart. My life is consumed with sorrow and my years with signs. My strength yields under affliction, and my bones waste away.

Sing to God, giving thanks; sing praises with the harp. God covers the heavens with clouds and prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and plants to serve our needs. Food is provided for the beasts and for young birds that cry to be fed. The strength of horses and warriors means nothing at all. Precious to God are reverence and faithfulness.

The nations surrounded me; with God’s help, I overcame them. Like bees they surrounded me, blazing like raging fire. With God’s help, I overcame them. I was thrust down, thrust down and falling, but God, my strength and my song, raised me up.

Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy. They go out full of tears, bearing the seed for sowing. They come back full of song, carrying their sheaves.

Shout joyfully to God, all you on earth, and proclaim God’s name. Render glorious praise; say to the God of all life, “How tremendous your deeds! Because of the greatness of your strength your enemies yield to you. Before you all the earth shall bow, shall sing to you, sing to your name!”

I bless you, O God, for you have heard my cry. You are my strength and my shelter; in you my heart trusts. My heart rejoices; with song I give you praise.

Those who entrust their cares to you will be sustained, O God. You will never allow the just to stumble.

You raise the poor from their lowliness; you lift the oppressed from the depths. You give dignity to their lives, a place of honor with all the faithful. You renew and strengthen all that lives; you make the empty heart content.

Draw me to you with the breath of love. Let me dwell in your presence and walk in your strength and glory that I may praise you all my days.

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your loving spirit be my guide in ways that are level and smooth.

Be merciful to me, Giver of Life; restore my health. Assure me of your love and my foes will not triumph over me. If you uphold me, I shall be unharmed and remain in your presence forever.

I yearn for your saving help; I hope in your word. My eyes yearn to see your promise. When will you comfort me?

O God, you are the source of all blessings; you sustain us in life itself. At your holy name, all people, all creation, stand in awe.

O God, you are good and forgiving, full of love for all who call. Listen to my prayer and attend to the sound of my voice.

I will sing of your strength and each morning acclaim your love, for you always uphold me in the day of my distress. O my Strength, it is you to whom I turn, for you are my refuge, the God who shows me love.

Glorify the name of the living God. Sing Praise, all you who stand in the holy place.

O God, you have been our refuge; age after age you shelter us. Before the first dawn, before the mountains were born or the seas came to be, you are God, without beginning or end.

Uphold my cause, O God, for I walk in integrity. I trust in you; I shall stand firm. Search me and try me; test my heart and my mind, for your love is before my eyes, and I walk in your truth.

How lovely is your dwelling place, God of Life. I am longing and yearning, yearning for your presence. My whole being cries out to you, to you, the living God.

Let me dwell in your presence forever; hide me in the shelter of your wings. You, O God, hear my prayer. Grant me the blessings of all who honor your name.

Let me dwell in your presence forever; hide me in the shelter of your wings. You, O God, hear my prayer. Grant me the blessings of all who honor your name.

Your love, O God, knows no bounds; your faithfulness is forever. From highest mountain to deepest sea you govern all with wisdom.

O God, come to my aid, make haste to help me!

We shall not fear though the earth should rock, though the waters rage and foam, though the mountains quake at its surging. God is with us; God is our stronghold.

Because of your goodness I hope in you all day long. Remember, your compassion and your steadfast love are from of old. Do not remember the sin of my youth. In your love remember me.

I will bless you, for you give me counsel, even at night you direct my heart. I am always aware of your presence. You are at my side; I shall stand firm.
