Call to Prayer

chapel

Five minutes before any scheduled liturgical event at the Mount, the bells sound and announce to all that it is time to set aside whatever it is that you are doing and make haste to the chapel. Benedict discusses this call to prayer in chapter 43 of his Rule and its importance related to the Work of God.

There was much debate about which category in Liturgy from A to Z this installment should be posted. Arguments were made for Music, Prayer, and Environment. The sounding of the bell is what prompts us to act, to get moving, and prayer is the result of that action. In the end Environment was chosen as the bells direct us to the chapel, the environment where communal prayer takes place.

Please play the audio file above to hear a recording of our bells. Enjoy!
