Erie County Community College to lease space at SBEC

St. Benedict Education Center, formerly St. Benedict Academy, on East 10th Street

The Benedictine Sisters of Erie are pleased to announce that they will lease space in the St. Benedict Education Center (SBEC) building to the Erie County Community College (ECCC) of Pennsylvania.

“This opportunity to support ECCC is in alignment with our commitment to inner-city Erie,” said Sister Stephanie Schmidt, Prioress. “Our foremothers arrived in Erie in 1856 with the intention of educating the children of immigrants and this effort is simply a continuation of our commitment to educating those who might otherwise not have such an opportunity.”

The ECCC Board of Trustees anticipates that the college will grow over time and eventually find a permanent home, but for the first year or two, they will lease classroom and office space in the SBEC building at 330 East 10th Street.

“We see this arrangement as a good fit,” explained Nancy Sabol, Executive Director of SBEC and a Benedictine Oblate. “The Erie County Community College will provide affordable, accessible education for the very population that St. Benedict Education Center serves.”

The first students are expected to arrive on September 1. More information is available on the ECCC website.
