The Call for Mercy─2016 Spring Art Show Opening

The Chapter 57 Gallery was lined with guests for the opening of the 2016 Spring Art Show celebrating Women’s History month and focusing on a “mercy” connection in this year designated by Pope Francis as the Year of Mercy. Each artist was asked to consider how they perceived their entry to exhibit an understanding of mercy through art and word.

“This year we are proud to exhibit the art of our Benedictine Sisters, Oblates and invited friends of the monastery,” said Sister Margaret Ann Pilewski, manager of the monastery’s Chapter 57 Gift Shop and organizer of the show. “The scope of the show is vast and includes an array of media including photography, wood turning, ceramic, watercolor, haiku, fiber and quilt, driftwood sculpture and mixed media.

The gallery is open on Sundays from 10:30 am until noon. “Some of the works are for sale, others are not; but all are meant to be enjoyed,” said Sister Margaret Ann. “Do come and visit. You may be inspired; you may simply be delighted. In either case, you won’t be disappointed.”

The Art show will run through April 24.

An online gallery featuring this year’s exhibit is a virtual art show that can be viewed at your leisure. “This is the first year we have done an online gallery,” said Sister Linda Romey, the community’s web tech. “We’re excited to make this wonderful collection of pieces available for viewing, especially for those unable to get to the monastery.”
