Celebrate Benedict and "seed the future"

Benedictines around the world celebrate the Solemnity of Benedict on March 21. This day is the commemoration of the death of St. Benedict of Nurcia, the Father of Western Monasticism and author of the Rule that guides Benedictines to living in right relationship with God, self, others and the world. For Benedictine monastics the Rule answers the question: how are we to live life with meaning, direction and purpose?

As Joan Chittister remarks in A Monastery Almanac: “The life of this man whose ideals and the Rule have guided people for over 1500 years is clear proof that everything we do seeds the future. No action is an empty one.” Good wisdom for us as we celebrate our monastic way of life as Benedictine Sisters and good wisdom for all.

May we work together to seed the future with authentic actions of courage, care, compassion and love.

Happy Feast Day!

Prayer for Benedict's Day

God of all,
today Benedict gives us a reminder
of who we want to become.

Using the words of a
gentle, disciplined Abbot,
Benedict gives us in his Rule
the wisdom of spirituality:
how to live a Christ-centered life.

It is the Rule of Benedict
that teaches us
how to live lives
that reflect your love.

May we daily live a life of caring ─
showing kindness and compassion
to all and in any and all situations,
so that a future of hope
will be seeded
by authentic actions
of courage and care.
