The Community Welcomes Bishop Persico to the Monastery

Bishop Lawrence Persico, the new Bishop of the Erie Diocese, visited the monastery and joined the community for Evening Prayer and dinner. It was an opportunity for the Bishop to meet the Benedictine Sisters of Erie and experience the gift of hospitality that we feel blessed to extend. After an enjoyable meal, the Bishop expressed his gratitude for the service that the Benedictine Sisters provide to the people of God in Erie and then took the time to greet the sisters personally.

It wasn’t so long ago that Bishop Persico, when asked what he wanted the people of Erie to know about him, answered very simply with a twinkle in his eye, “That he’s a nice guy.” It didn’t take us long to realize that he is, indeed, a nice guy. In parting, Sister Anne Wambach, prioress, gave the Bishop a copy of the cd, Te Deum: Chants of Praise, a collection of scripture-based songs, hymns and canticles used in our daily prayer. Written by the late Sister Mary David Callahan and sung by the sisters under the direction of Sister Marilyn Schauble, the music will be a reminder that our prayer and good wishes uphold the Bishop as his ministry in the Diocese of Erie continues to unfold.
