Do you have a poem in your pocket?

All around Erie people are carrying a poem in their pocket thanks to the many folks who participated in the poetry hand-out organized by The Writing Studio, a collective of women writers and literary advocates located at The Studio at St. Mary’s A Space to Create, 310 E. 10th Street.

There are many stories to tell about the success of the event but this particular one is too good not to be shared:

Sister Carol Ann McLaughlin and Rusty, her therapy dog, decided to join the effort and handed out poems at a local nursing home they visit regularly. “The residents were so happy to get a poem,” she said. “In fact, they even started to remember the poems from their youth and began to recite them by heart.” One resident shared: “I can hardly remember what I ate for breakfast but I can remember this poem.” Even better, in case you might have doubts about the power of poetry, instead of the normally scheduled BINGO, a poetry conversation ensued! Clearly, the power of poetry is a force to be reckoned with. So, keep a poem in your pocket, a verse in your heart and remember that “the world is full of poetry. The air is living with its spirit; and the waves dance to the music of its melodies, and sparkle in its brightness.”(James Gates Percival, American Poet, d.1856)
