The Journey Continues

"I ask that I may continue to seek God through sharing the monastic life with this Benedictine community." In response to these words of request spoken by Kathleen McCarthy at Evening Prayer on January 27, 2018, the Benedictine community warmly welcomed her into the novitiate.

During the ritual Sister Anne Wambach, prioress, invited the community to support Sister Kathleen and Sister Marilyn Schauble, Novice Director, during this year of continued discernment. As part ofnthe ritual Kathy was given a copy of the Rule of Benedict as a sign that this document will be the focal point of her studies in the coming year.

"At the beginning of chapter 4 of the Rule we hear: 'Your way of acting should be different from the world’s way,'" said Sister Anne Wambach in her reflections. "After living with the community for a period of time as a postulant Kathy decided to continue the journey with us. Choosing a novitiate year will provide Kathy with the opportunity to strengthen and solidify her desire to spend her life acting differently from the world’s way."

The novitiate follows the postulancy and is a year of intense study and immersion into community life. The novice learns more about the Benedictine charism and the monastic vows. At the end of this year, if she and the community have discerned that she is being called to continue this journey, she will make her first monastic profession.
