NADI 2018

Sister Kathleen McCarthy, novice (right), and Sister Marilyn Schauble, novice director, recently attended the annual Novice and Directors Institute (NADI) held this year at Sacred Heart Monastery, Yankton, SD. The theme was Learning and Growing in the School of the Lord’s Service.

This gathering provided an opportunity for novices and directors to meet, support, and learn about the Benedictine way of life and each other through the lens of initial formation. The eight novices represented seven Benedictine communities across the U.S. “It gave me hope to experience women who are earnestly seeking God and who have embraced the novitiate stage of formation with such openness,” said Sister Marilyn. Speakers addressed such topics as Monastic Values, Scripture, Christology, Humility, Stewardship, Lectio Divina, Visio Divina and Community Living, to name just a few. Service was also part of the week and the group spent time at a nearby nursing home.

“NADI was a great 10 day experience of being able to connect with novices and directors from other Benedictine communities, and with the community in Yankton, SD who hosted us, “ shared Sister Kathy. “The time was rich with presentations, sharing personal and community stories, praying together, meals, conversations, outings and time to walk - one time even to Missouri! I’m thankful for the experience and happy to be home.”

Sister Marilyn added: “This was my first NADI experience as a novice director. I was able to engage in and be enriched by conversation with the other novice directors which I found very helpful. Networking offers many benefits and lots of support.”
