New Postulant Arrives

On Sunday, November 27, Kathy McCarthy knocked on the monastery door, accompanied by Sister Marilyn Schauble, Vocation Director. “I have walked with Kathy in her discernment process,” said Sister Marilyn. “I am very happy to walk with her into our monastery.” Upon entering the front door Kathy was greeted by the community and asked by Sister Anne Wambach, Prioress, “What is it that you seek?” Kathy replied, “I seek to live the monastic way of life in this community and continue my spiritual journey.”

Kathy, originally from Pittsburgh, PA, worked for L’Arche, Erie for many years before moving to L’Arche Calgary, Canada where she has worked for the past 16 years. The ritual of entrance marks the beginning of Kathy’s postulancy. Postulancy is the first phase of monastic formation. As a postulant Kathy will participate fully in the life of the community and live the communal life of prayer and ministry. She will learn community history, vision and values and have classes on Benedictine spirituality as she continues to discern her vocation.

In addition to the presence of a number of guests from L’Arche, Erie, there to witness the ritual, were two of Kathy’s siblings: Peggy and Erie Benedictine, Anne McCarthy, along with Marie, Kathy’s niece (Peggy’s daughter).

At the conclusion of the ritual, the Prioress captured the moment very simply: “We welcome you to this community. We thank you for responding to God’s call. May you serve God with the gifts you have been given so that in all things God may be glorified.”
