NO DRONES Niagara Rally

Sister Marlene Bertke and three others from the Erie peace community took part in a NO DRONES NIAGARA rally at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Base on Friday August 2, 2013.The rally was sponsored by the Western NY Peace Center to protest plans to station drones at the Niagara Air Reserve Base.

According to the Buffalo News, the US Air Force is proposing the installation of a drone squadron at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station (NFARS) in Niagara Falls, New York. The base has been under repeated threat of closure since 2005. This new “mission” is being touted as a long-term lifeline to the base and the nearly 3,000 military and civilian workers employed there.

The vast majority of the American population view drones with a combination of suspicion and horror, recognizing their use in the murders of innocent civilians abroad, and the extra-judicial killings of American citizens. People also recognize their likely use in spying on Americans domestically, as well as in putting down popular uprisings that might occur in the not too distant future.
