SBA Christmas in July

The crowd of bingo players at Polish Falcons Club

Walking into the St. Benedict Academy "bingo hall" at Polish Falcons Club, the first sign on the ticket desk read, "Admission $25. With a Christmas gift or a $5 donation receive a free additional pack!" "Those gifts," SBA Board co-chair Valerie Purzycki, '88 explained, indicating several large piles that included toys, games, dolls, and beautiful hand-knit hats and scarves, "are all for the children at St. Benedict Child Development Center. A portion of the proceeds from today's bingo will go to help support the Center."

"I am so grateful for the continual support of the SBA Alumnae Association for our children and families over the years," said Sister Katherine Horan, director of the center. "Your generosity and gifting of toys, blankets, and financial contributions help families with some of their needs. Most importantly your generosity brightens the day of a child with that little special gift of love. You have made our day and we are blessed!"

In addition to supporting the ministries of the Benedictine Sisters who educated them at St. Benedict Academy, the Alumnae Association also raises money to support Catholic education through their scholarship program for relatives of alumnae. Bingos, like the one held on the afternoon of July 18, raise several thousand dollars through admission fees, instant games, raffles, and the collaboration of the Polish Falcons Club in offering the space for the games.

"We always sell out," said Darlene Kerstetter, '82 co-chair of the association with Valerie. "And the more games we offer, the more generous the players are. They know they are supporting good causes." Other board members who spent their Sunday afternoon selling games and tickets were Sue Chase, '82 Katie Young, '87 Sue Zill, '65, Cheryl Zingelewicz, '65, and Ann Comstock, '64. Sheila Warner, '73, also contributed.

In keeping with the "Christmas in July" theme, the board members and some players sported Christmas apparel. There were also enough wrapped door prizes to guarantee that every participant went home with a prize.

But the biggest winners will be the children at St. Benedict Child Development Center.
