Sister Katherine Horan receives Green Apple Award

Sister Katherine Horan found out in person that Green apples are sweet rewards when Betsy Weist of the Justice, Peace, Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Team from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern PA showed up at Our Lady of Peace School (OLP) to make a presentation. Sister Kath was selected to receive a Green Apple Award in recognition of her classroom initiatives relating to awareness of the earth and the environment. JPIC uses this award to applaud the efforts of elementary school Catholic educators who are teaching their students about the environment and environmental stewardship.

“Encouraging OLP students to be more aware of environmental topics and issues is important to me, said Sister Kath. “The recognition came because we pinpointed plastic as a main source of pollution. Clean-ups and school wide plastic free action planning followed to create an environmentally sustainable school campus.”

The students were on hand for the award presentation. “This is a great honor for all of us,” shared Sister Kath upon receiving the award. “Environmental Education is the vehicle in which students are empowered to create change in order to become lifelong stewards of our Earth. This is just the beginning.”
