Under 55

Sisters Katherine Horan and Cindy Hoover will be attending the national “55 and Under Gathering” of Benedictine Sisters. The group will meet at Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton, South Dakota. The theme of the gathering is Wisdom Calls: Carpe Diem. More than 85 sisters under the age of 55, and hailing from 22 monasteries across the country, will join together to be enriched by relevant input, prayer and social events.

Sister Katherine, a member of the event’s planning committee, arranged for Sister Audrey Steff and her woodturning club to create vases as a symbolic gift for all the participants. The Presque Isle Woodturning Club originated in 2000. Sister Audrey was one of the seven founding members. “I love to be engaged in woodturning,” she said. “Woodturning is a prayer that allows me to create and release the beauty that lies in each piece of wood.”

The vases are made from various Northwestern, PA woods. They are a sign and symbol of the “heartwood” of monastic life. While each vase is unique, they all are capable of holding beauty.
