What a Fish Fry!

“This is really yummy!” said Kaylee, an 9-year-old regular guest of the Soup Kitchen, while sitting in the family dining room with an almost-eaten fish sandwich in her hands. “And I don’t normally like fish… but I really like this kind!”

The fish sandwich that Kaylee was enjoying so much was prepared by 16 members of the SONS (Save Our Native Species) of Lake Erie Fishing Club on Friday, September 15. The SONS brought, prepared, and fried up 107 pounds of walleye and perch in their own homemade beer batter.

Chuck Miller, organizer of the annual fish fry, was quick to mention fellow donors who contributed to making the meal possible. “The SONS caught some of the perch we served,” he said, “but the rest of the perch came from seven boatloads of veterans the SONS took out on Lake Erie on our perch boats. The walleye was donated by the Erie Sport Fishing Association’s summer walleye tournaments and from Dr. Bob Ferraro.”

Other donations came from the National Fuel Foundation who donated funds to make the dinner happen, and Guardian Elder Care who provided potato chips, soda, desserts, and homemade potato salad purchased from Theresa’s Deli.
